Most Dangerous Intersections: I-81 at Inwood, Exits 8 to 16

The eight miles of Interstate 81 between Exit 8 at Inwood and Exit 16 in Martinsburg pack a lot into a short drive. Commuters use it every morning. Local drivers hop on for one exit and hop right back off. Tractor-trailers roll through all day. Few stretches of road in West Virginia carry as many. Put all of that in a few miles, and you get one of the busiest roads in the state.

Lanes that appear and disappear

The road does not stay the same width. Traffic shifts from two lanes to three, then back to two. Each change forces drivers to pick a lane and move over. At 70 miles an hour, that is a lot of merging in a short space. Drivers who use this road daily know where the lanes drop. Everyone else finds out late.

Trucks, and a lot of them

This is a freight route first. Loaded trucks share every lane with cars. That includes the left lane, which is legal in West Virginia. It is not legal in Virginia. So a trucker who just crossed the state line may be doing something the car behind them does not expect. Drivers here come from four different states. They bring four sets of habits.

The roundabout at Inwood

Drivers leaving at Exit 8 meet a traffic circle. For many of them, it is the first roundabout they have ever driven. They slow way down, stop when they should not, or pick the wrong lane through it. That backs traffic up onto the ramp. The ramp connects to an interstate where nobody is slowing down.

Left lane drivers and weavers

The left lane is for passing. Plenty of drivers sit in it anyway. Others weave from lane to lane to pick up two or three car lengths. Both habits create sudden gaps and sudden brake lights. In heavy truck traffic, one hard stop can start something much bigger.

The crashes we see on this stretch

Our cases from these eight miles tend to be serious. Rollovers happen when a driver jerks the wheel at highway speed. Multi-vehicle wrecks happen when traffic stacks up behind a slowdown. Truck crashes bring the most force of all, and the injuries match. A short piece of road produces a big share of the worst wrecks in Berkeley County.

Truck cases are not car cases

When a tractor-trailer is involved, the crash report is only the start. Some of the most important proof sits with the trucking company, and it doesn’t last forever.
