Meet Nyla!

Nyla’s story starts at Jefferson County Animal Control, where she arrived underweight and covered in urine. She’s a shorter, stocky girl who should be carrying real substance on her frame, but she weighed only about 45 pounds when they took her in. We knew we had to pull her into rescue and get her back on track. In just about a month, she’s gained roughly 13 pounds, and she’s still filling out beautifully. Nyla deserves a happy, loving home, and she’s ready for it.

At about 10 months old, Nyla is one friendly German Shepherd. She just wants attention, and she will absolutely let you know it — a nudge, a lean, those big expressive eyes. She has a whole vocabulary for “please keep petting me,” and she isn’t shy about using every word of it. Despite the rough start she’s had, she’s never soured on people. If anything, she’s more eager for their company because of it.

She’s still very much a puppy at heart, with all the enthusiasm that comes with her age. Her energy level runs medium to high, so she’ll do best with someone who enjoys an active companion and can give her regular exercise and something to think about. Like most dogs her age, she’s a work in progress. She needs help with the basics, including house training and general manners, and she’ll thrive with a patient, consistent adopter. The good news is that she genuinely loves being around people, which gives her a real head start.

Nyla doesn’t seem to mind other dogs and is comfortable sharing space with them. Because of her size, energy, and puppy exuberance, though, she may be too much for small children or cats at this time. She isn’t unkind, just young and enthusiastic, and she needs a home where she can grow up without accidentally overwhelming someone smaller than she is. Prior German Shepherd experience or a solid understanding of the breed would be a real benefit for her adopters.

What Nyla needs most is someone willing to invest in her. Give this girl good food, structure, exercise, and plenty of the affection she craves, and she’ll grow into a loyal, devoted companion — the kind of dog who watches the door for you and follows you from room to room simply because you’re her person. She’s already come so far. Now she just needs the home where the rest of her story happens.
