In this episode of our Most Dangerous Intersections video series, personal injury attorneys Stephen and Andrew Skinner take you to a local hotspot for crashes: the intersection of WV Route 340 and Augustine Avenue, just outside Washington High School in Jefferson County.
This is more than just a confusing road—it’s one of the most dangerous intersections in Jefferson County. With heavy traffic, a tricky layout, and lots of young drivers nearby, it’s a crash waiting to happen.
Here are the top four dangers that make this intersection especially risky:
1. Confusing Layout and Multiple Lanes
The intersection connects several roads and lanes with little warning. Drivers turning left or trying to cross often get stuck between fast-moving traffic from both directions. It’s easy to miss key signs or misjudge another vehicle’s speed.
2. High School Traffic
With Washington High School nearby, this road sees a lot of young, less experienced drivers—especially during morning and afternoon rush. School buses, teen drivers, and hurried parents add to the mix, making split-second mistakes more likely.
3. Limited Visibility
Parts of this stretch have poor sightlines, especially when trying to turn onto or off of Augustine Avenue. Trees, traffic buildup, and poor lighting at certain hours make it hard to spot oncoming vehicles.
4. Speeding and Aggressive Driving
Although the speed limit is posted, drivers often go much faster—especially coming down Rt. 340. Quick stops and sudden merges are common, which puts everyone at risk, especially during heavy traffic or rainy conditions.
