If you drive on WV Rt. 340 through the Fairfax Crossing/Home Depot intersection, you know how tricky it can be. This busy spot has heavy traffic, multiple lanes, and drivers coming from all directions. That’s why it is one of the most dangerous intersections in our area.

Why Is This Intersection So Risky?
- Heavy Traffic: Rt. 340 is a major road, so cars and trucks are almost always flowing through this area.
- Lots of Entry Points: Drivers are turning in and out of nearby shopping centers like Home Depot, adding to the confusion.
- Limited Visibility: Drivers can have trouble seeing oncoming cars, especially when traffic is heavy or the weather is bad.
- High Speeds: Vehicles move quickly on Rt. 340, and that can make crashes more serious.
Things to Watch for at This Intersection
- Use the turn lanes correctly. Cutting across traffic without the proper turn lane is dangerous. Always get into the designated lane early so you can turn safely.
- Watch for traffic from shopping centers. Vehicles often pull out from Home Depot and nearby stores quickly. Expect this and leave extra space between you and the car ahead.
- Be patient when the light turns green. Cars from the shopping centers and side streets may still be clearing the intersection. Take a moment before accelerating.
- Stay alert for blind spots. Larger trucks and SUVs can block your view of smaller cars trying to turn or cross. Make sure the path is clear before moving forward.
- Don’t try to beat yellow lights. With fast-moving traffic on Rt. 340, running a yellow light can quickly turn into a serious accident. Stop safely and wait for the next green.
What Accidents Happen Most Often Here?
Because this intersection is so busy, rear-end crashes and side-impact (T-bone) accidents are common. These crashes can cause serious injuries because they often happen at higher speeds. Drivers turning or rushing through yellow lights can also cause dangerous collisions.
